Nuclear Medicine/PET
Today, nuclear medicine offers procedures that are essential in many medical
specialties, from oncology to cardiology to psychiatry. Nuclear medicine
imaging is unique, because it provides doctors with information about both
structure and function.
PET imaging, one type of nuclear medicine study, is used most often to detect
cancer and to examine the effects of cancer therapy. PET scans of the heart
can be used to determine blood flow to the heart muscle and help evaluate
signs of coronary artery disease. PET scans of the brain are used to evaluate
patients who have memory disorders of an undetermined cause, suspected or
proven brain tumors or seizure disorders that are not responsive to medical
therapy and are therefore candidates for surgery.
SRP's radiologists in the nuclear medicine area received residencies and fellowships
at some of the nation's most prestigious institutions, including: National
Institutes of Health (NIH), Emory University Health Care Center, Washington
University - Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and SUNY at Buffalo School
of Medicine.
